John Robertson's Bio

Courtenay, BC, Vancouver Island, Canada

John began playing golf at age 7 with his parents and quickly developed a passion (some might say obsession) for the game. By his late teens, he was the club champion at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, a title that he won in 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995. He captained the golf team at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned his B.A.(Hons) in Mathematics.

Before John turned pro in 1996 he had established himself as a top amateur with 2 top 10 finishes in the Ontario Amateur and by playing in 1992, '94 and '95 US Amateurs.

In 1996 he turned pro and moved to Florida. He earned his Canadian Tour card for 1997 and finished tied for 8th in his first official event, the Payless Open. This helped to springboard him to the Rookie Of The Year title. Later that year, his continued good play led him to the PGA Tour Qualifying school finals. He was a member of the NIKE Tour in 1998 and briefly led the Permian Basin Open on Saturday afternoon before falling back to a middling finish.

John maintained his Canadian Tour status through 2001. That year, alhough it had the highlight of playing in the Canadian Open, was John's last year as a full time touring professional as he did not earn a PGA Tour card. Family was too important to pass up on.

John and his wife Heather had their son Jackson in June of 2002. In 2001, John began working at Crown Isle Golf Resort and he has been teaching ever since.

John's Philosophy for Golf

  • Fun comes first.
  • If you aren't very competitive then your enjoyment on the golf course should be all that matters. If you are, consider this: Have you ever played your best and not had fun?
  • Understanding is Power.
  • John's primary goal is to empower his students by giving them an understanding of the 'truisms' of golf and their own personal tendencies. A knowledgable golfer knows what they do well, how to improve the things they do poorly and how to play their game to their strengths. This can only lead to better playing.
